On the 11th of February 2020, young pharmacists from all over the world joined forces on social media to celebrate United Nations International Day of Women and Girls in Science that calls on everyone to smash stereotypes, defy gender biases, and defeat discrimination that hold women and girls back in the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Moreover, these young pharmacists showed full support of FIPWiSE campaign, a new initiative of FIP to help achieve gender equity for Women in pharmaceutical Science and Education and empower them to achieve their full potential, and to attract students and young women into the fields of science or education.

With the hashtag, #FIPWiSE, let us then take a look at some of their various tweets and Facebook posts, as well as the short views that were sent to the YPG Publications Team.

“I am a woman in #pharmaceutical education. I support #FIPWiSE campaign! This campaign is important to empower young pharmacists and scientists to achieve their full potential in their workplace! A report launched by the GHWN Youth Hub: “Youth and decent work in the health and social care sector” showed there were age and gender discrimination happening around the world. Not only that, my personal experience showed how young women need a flexible career workplace and mentoring system to be put in place to support their career. It is important for us, as young pharmacists and scientists, to advocate and make gender equity a reality for women in pharmaceutical sciences and education.

Join the movement! #TransformPharmacy #StrongerTogether.”

“Gender bias and discrimination in and outside the work environment is still prevalent. Our workplace, superiors or peers may not always support us. I have experienced first-hand ethnic and racial discrimination, and understand how dreadful that can feel.

Putting down others won’t make you rise any higher. We need to all do better to support and advocate for each other. Surround yourself with #WomenInScience and #mentors who inspire you every day. Let’s empower our young female pharmacists and scientists to unlock their full potential.”

“This FIPWiSE initiative is important because it has helped to raise awareness of the gaps that exist in achieving gender equity for women, in the fields of science and education. Young women face many challenges, especially when they are students or starting out in their career. Some of these challenges include a lack of/not being aware of female role models excelling in the field of science or education, as well as a lack of supportive systems for young women to evolve in their careers as easily as their male counterparts. This initiative has created an opportunity to raise awareness about these issues and stimulate the thinking of everyone, especially in pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences, towards finding solutions to these key challenges, amongst others.

Being a young woman can prove to be tough when one is starting out in their career. Particularly, in the aspect of leadership, young women are well represented in leadership roles early in their career. However, as they advance in their career they are less likely to be found occupying leadership positions. Organizations should create supportive systems, policies, and enabling environments to counter the barriers that prevent women from continuing in leadership roles, and excelling in their career. Equal opportunities should be created for all women, and defined quotas for the involvement of women should exist to increase the numbers of young women in diverse career paths and leadership roles within pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences.”

“I am a #woman in pharmacy and I support the FIPWiSE initiative.

Women should be given the mentorship and necessary support to excel in their chosen field in Pharmacy. Only then, can we be on the path of gender equity.

Employers should give equal opportunities to women as they give men when it comes to work promotions. That way, women will feel empowered. #equity”
