Board of Pharmaceutical Sciences (BPS) Meeting

The Board of Pharmaceutical Sciences (BPS) Meeting was held on Saturday 19 of January and Sunday 20 of March in The Hague, The Netherlands. Sherly Meilianti, the Project Coordinator on the Young Pharmacists Group (YPG) Steering Committee, had the privilege to attend the meeting as an observer.

Over the span of two days, a lot of items were discussed to plan for the upcoming year and reflect on recent successes. Here are some highlights from the meeting:

  • Professor Giovanni Pauletti has been re-elected as the BPS Scientific Secretary
  • The 7th FIP Pharmaceutical Sciences World Congress (PSWC) session proposals for Congress deadline had been extended to 28 Feb 2019
  • The Special Interest Group (SIG) Formulation Design and Pharmaceutical Technology is working on a special project about the formulation of medicine for children: The investigation and education for future pharmacists and researchers at Nagoya City University
  • A revision of the SIG structure from 10 SIGs to 6 SIGs:
  1. New Medicines: Focus on the discovery and development of new therapeutic entities, including small molecules, biologics, natural products, cell and gene therapies. What’s new and on the horizon?
  2. Drug Delivery and Manufacturing: Focus on new developments in pharmaceutical technology and manufacturing, including materials science, with emphasis on interest and relevance to practitioners in various settings.
  3. Personalised and Precision Medicine: Focus on patient-specific interventions utilising state-of-the-art scientific approaches, including PK/PD modelling, pharmacogenetics, therapeutic drug monitoring, and diagnostics and devices linked to drug administration and adherence.
  4. Regulatory Sciences and Quality: Focus on regulations and analytical technologies required to assure the safety and efficacy of drug products/medical devices, including consideration of bioequivalence, biosimilars, and international harmonization, with emphasis on interest and relevance to practitioners in various settings.
  5. Pharmacy Practice Research: Focus on pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacovigilance, medicines policy, governance, access, information, pharmacoeconomics, and evidence-based usage.
  6. New Generation of Pharmaceutical Scientists: Focus on workforce development of future pharmaceutical scientists, including consideration of undergraduate/graduate curricula, professional/career development and leadership training, with emphasis on interest and relevance to practitioners in various settings.
  • The establishment of the New Generation of Pharmaceutical Scientists (NGPS) SIG will allow new FIP members to join a BPS SIG that is more specific and relevant to their career interests. The goal of the NGPS SIG is to enable young scientists (MS/PhD students, postdocs, and early-career scientists) to impact the future of the global pharmaceutical sciences community. NGPS SIG also strives to connect young scientists in academia, industry, and government and offer an opportunity for global networking. For more information on this SIG, please contact NextGenBPS@fip.org.
  • IPSF’s 65th World Congress will be from 30th July to 8th August 2019 in Kigali, Rwanda, hosted by the Rwanda Pharmaceutical Student’s Association (RPSA). The theme of the conference is “Striving towards Health for All: Exploring Innovations in Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences,” which will have discussions around the main global health agenda stressing the role of pharmacists in achieving Universal Health Coverage.
